Avodart info

Avodart (Dutasteride) is a new medicine made by GlaxoSmithKline used to relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that usually occurs in men after the age of 50.

Avodart showed great effectiveness in treating prostate enlargement in men.

This medicine has passed stage II of FDA testing for the treatment of hair loss in men and has showed promising results as far as stopping hair loss and growing new hair. On October 9, 2002 the FDA granted clearance to GlaxoSmithKline for Avodart or Dutasteride as the most recent hair loss treatment medicine.

After six month of treatment, the hair counts measured in a 1 inch diameter circle increased by about ~96 hairs with 0.5mg Avodart, compared to about ~72 hairs with 5mg Propecia. The hair counts increased significantly with an increase in dosage with the biggest gain being ~108 hairs with a dose of 2.5mg Avodart. So compared to 5mg Propecia, 2.5 mg Avodart grew about 1.5 times as many hairs.
